Job Description:

The Mechanical Engineer’s primary responsibility is to be a technical specialist and contribute to all facets of the design and implementation of our proprietary battery recycling system. They will work closely with members of our engineering and innovation teams to ensure the successful design, construction, and operation of our recycling technologies as each system is developed from testing at the pilot to commercialization at the full plant scale. They will contribute to the design of sorting systems, mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and product development.

They will have a strong desire to learn and understand the recycling business, including intermediate, end-products and product quality metrics. The ideal candidate will have experience designing systems to shred electronic waste (including batteries) and be fully committed to realizing a low carbon emission future for recycling.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing, conceptualizing, and documenting specifications for battery recycling
  • Prepare and approve equipment design drawings
  • Drive and own the transition of recycling technologies from bench to pilot to full commercial scales.
  • Work closely with staff scientists and engineers and external vendors to conduct experiments, analyze test results, and document product quality improvements.
  • Design innovative processes for sorting, preparing, crushing, shredding, and separating materials with strict hazardous material handling requirements often found when dealing with end-of-life batteries.
  • Refine and upgrade recycled products by optimizing optical, electrical, and magnetic separation processes
  • Contribute to technical-economic assessments, actively participating in the preparation and/or technical reviews.
  • Familiarity with EPA Title 40, NIOSH, OSHA, ASTM, ISO, R2V3, and Universal Waste requirements & standards is a bonus

Experience:

The ideal candidate will be familiar with research and development, design, installation, commissioning, and operations of mechanical or chemical material separations facilities. They will be committed to designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient manufacturing processes, ensuring quality control of outputs and specifying material conditions required to meet our objectives. They should also be a problem solver with an interest in scaling processes from the bench scale up to the pilot and commercial scales.

Job Requirements:

  • Mechanical Engineering B.S. or higher degree
  • Deep experience drafting 2D and 3D models using AutoCAD or Fusion 360
  • Hands-on industrial experience that demonstrates safe and quality work
  • Knowledge of computer aided design simulation tools such as FEM
  • Knowledge of Experimental Design methodologies including FMEA, DOE, root cause analysis, and six sigma
  • Knowledge of recycling processes (bonus)
  • Demonstrated use of Machine Learning to sort and categorize objects (bonus)
  • Experience as a mechanical engineer, equipment design engineer, or process engineer, or cooling engineer (bonus)

Work Environment:
