Amsted Rail has an immediate opening for a Melter at its operation in Granite City, Illinois.

This position is responsible to control the safe and efficient production of 3 grades of molten steel in the melt shop. Duties include monitoring scrap charges, calculating alloy additions and chemical testing of steel composition. Position oversees a crew of hourly employees to achieve these goals.

• Analyze melt chemistry results and calculate proper combinations of element additions to render a final chemistry within grade and customer specifications.
• Coordinate activities concerning furnace and chemistry lab to ensure steel is manufactured and tested according to proper procedures.
• Maintain sidewall and bottom refractories of electric furnaces to ensure refractories are set to acceptable dimensions based on blueprints.
• Direct housekeeping efforts and maintain a clean environment to ensure employee safety around operating equipment.
• Maintain inventory control with adequate levels of materials and order any supplies needed to maintain efficient operations.
• Maintain daily and monthly records of production operations and output.
• Perform all other related duties assigned.

Requirements:

• Minimum high school diploma required. Four-year degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related Engineering preferred
• Knowledge and familiarity with production of molten steel
• Familiarity with electric arc furnace preferable
• Familiarity with refractory preferable
• Knowledge of computer applications a plus
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to direct and motivate people, complete multiple tasks promptly, and work well with others. Organized, responsible, self-motivated, and provide recommendations to enhance operations and safety performance
• Able to complete multiple tasks in a timely manner, work well with others, organized, responsible, self-motivated, possess a mathematical aptitude, able to implement company’s policies concerning safety, and make sound judgments with limited supervision.
