Middle School Counselor
This position is a Union position – covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Primary Functions
- Develop and deliver the UNIS counseling curriculum in a classroom setting.
- Assist students in the areas of social/emotional development and academic and career planning.
- Provide individual and small group counseling in a variety of settings.
- Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff, and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in an international school setting.
- Make appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists.
- Assist the Administration and work with the Curriculum Director to plan, evaluate, and revise the UNIS counseling program.
- Pursue continuous professional growth to stay abreast of the field.
- Continuously work to envelop and to promote an understanding of working with diverse populations and cultures within the international school setting.
- Encourage and assist students to take pride in their own cultures while understanding and respecting the cultures and perspectives of others.
- Monitor and advise students and their parents as to progress toward promotion/graduation.
- Participate in activities that contribute to the effective operation of UNIS.
Major Job Responsibilities
Counseling
- Conduct structured goal-oriented counseling lessons in systematic response to identified needs of groups of children. Themes include adjustment, social skill development, conflict resolution, wellness, academic skill building, and career awareness.
- Provide individual planning sessions to students in the areas of social/emotional development, academic planning and success, and career awareness in accordance with planned objectives for grade level.
- Assist in the transition to Tutorial House, and to post-Tutorial House options, as well as with transition to and from UNIS.
- Participate in weekly referrals and case conferences, and generate referrals for students identified by faculty as needing additional academic/social emotional support.
- Interpret tests, student data and other assessment results appropriately in the counseling environment.
- Provide individual short term, solution focused counseling in response to student requests and/or teacher or parent referrals.
Consulting
- Provide information and skills to parents, school staff, administration, and the community to assist them in helping UNIS students in social, academic, and career development
- Assist parents in addressing school related problems and issues. Refer students and their parents, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs, and/or outside agencies.
- Inform students and their parents as to pertinent test results and their implications for educational and career planning.
Coordinating
- Promote the liaison and coordination of school activities and resources and communicate between and among home, school, and community.
- Advocate for equal access to programs and services for all students
- Plan and coordinate programs such as substance abuse prevention programs, smoking cessation programs, and other extensions of the counseling curriculum.
- Develop and coordinate parent education programs to assist students in making a smooth transition from middle school to tutorial house, and in planning post tutorial house options and transitions to and from UNIS.
- Develop and coordinate programs for UNIS parents that address identified needs such student transition, parenting skills, and substance abuse prevention.
Curriculum Management
- Assist the Administration and work with the Curriculum Director to design, evaluate, and revise a planned sequential and developmentally appropriate international school counseling curriculum to include lessons in personal/social growth and understanding, academic success, study and organizational skills, and career awareness and planning.
- Deliver the UNIS counseling curriculum in a systematic manner using diverse strategies and settings.
Managing
- Review the UNIS counseling program annually with other counselors and with administrators. Establish a planning calendar for lessons and groups.
- Assist in planning, maintaining and evaluating the systems necessary for the support, maintenance, and improvement of the UNIS counseling program.
- Contribute to the production of printed materials, guides, webpages, etc. that support the program
- Contribute to the school newsletter and/or other public information as a way to promote social emotional wellness initiatives, where applicable.
- Articulate the TH Divisional Counseling program and services to students, parents, teachers, staff, and community through parent coffees, faculty/staff meetings, and student assemblies.
The School
- Participate in school decision making and in activities, which contribute to the school’s mission statement and principles.
- Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students. Communicate with administrators, teachers and staff, parents and students as to the role of the UNIS counseling program and practices in the overall educational process of UNIS.

- Adhere to the ethical standards of school counselor associations.
- Adhere to preferred practices prescribed by school counselor associations.
- Demonstrate personal growth and professional development.
Salary Range of $61,075 to $100,951.
