Position Description - Minister of Music

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Minister of Music shall be responsible for leading and supporting the music ministry of the church. He/she will coordinate with the pastor and contemporary worship leader provide organ/piano accompaniment for services, and direct the choir and praise team.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Proficient on organ, piano, and demonstrate the ability to lead music.

· Good communication skills, both verbal and written.

· Ability to take direction, work as a team member and lead volunteers.

· Punctuality and dependability

ACCOUNTABILITY

Works with the pastor and worship leader to coordinate music selections.

Receives direction and reports directly to the pastor and the chairperson of the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Meets regularly with pastor and staff to facilitate music ministry.

Attend regularly scheduled meetings of staff and other appropriate committees

Be present in the building for a minimum of 5 hours weekly.

Must obtain a child abuse clearance and background check as per PA state law since the employee will have contact with children.

Provide a minimum of two weeks notice prior to or as soon as planned absences are known to allow for scheduling of a substitute organist/pianist. Employee will be responsible in providing appropriate substitutes for worship services or special events when not available.

Employer will provide a salary of $_14,000__ per year.

Vacation time will be provided with full salary for 3 weeks annually which includes the three Sundays.

An annual allowance for continuing education of $300 per year will be provided.

Provide 60 days advance written notice if employee wishes to terminate employment or not renew contract.

This is an employment at will situation. The employer will also provide a 60 day notice if a change is deemed appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Services are as follows:

1 weekly Sunday service (two services on Christmas Eve and Easter)

1 weekly rehearsal with the choir and worship team/worship leader

Proficiency with both traditional and contemporary Christian music required!

MUSIC FOR SERVICES

Provide organ and piano music at all services. This includes Advent and Christmas seasons, children’s plays, and special services, Lent and Easter seasons, special services, and summer outdoor services.

Absent an emergency, the employee may not use vacation days or otherwise be absent from Sunday services on Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Easter (both services), Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day (both services).

Rehearse weekly with church choir and special musicians as scheduled, and accompany the choir during scheduled worship services.

Support the church’s worship environment through the well-prepared execution of music presented by the choir or with special music.

Be responsible for the appropriateness and readiness of all music rendered.

Support congregational worship through the accurate leadership of hymns and songs.

With input from the pastor and worship leader: plan, select, and prepare preludes, postludes and offertories, and other special music.

MUSIC PROGRAM SUPPORT

Cooperate in area of general planning and leadership of music program

working directly with worship leader and the pastor.

Work with Sunday School Leader(s), when necessary, to plan, select, and prepare songs for the Children’s Choir

Be responsible for purchase of music as necessary.

Be responsible for hiring instrumental and vocalist soloists when required.

Rehearse with church / hired musicians as scheduled

Responsible for the appropriateness and readiness of all music

Expenditures shall not exceed amount provided in church budget.

Report to appropriate committee on condition and needs for maintenance of employer’s musical instruments.

FUNERALS AND WEDDINGS

Provide music for Funeral and Weddings requiring organ or piano music and held on employer’s premises.

Employee shall receive a fee ($250) for wedding rehearsal and service as per the church’s wedding policy.

Employee shall receive a fee of $175 for funerals.

EVALUATION

A performance review will be conducted annually in the fall for budget prep time.

This review will rely on input from the Pastor, worship leader, and others as appropriate. The leadership council will submit compensation recommendations to the annual charge conference.

A PA State Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Clearance will be required for this position
