Berkeley Lab's Biosciences Area Office has an opening for a Part Time Communications Specialist to join their team!


In this exciting role, you will create and edit documents and electronic media to communicate the mission and achievements of Biosciences Area researchers. This position will produce web content, multimedia presentations, visual displays, and presentation materials and have the opportunity to communicate about a broad variety of research areas, such as bioimaging, environmental genomics, systems biology, microbiome interactions, and cell biology.


What You Will Do:

  • Apply broad knowledge of the Biosciences Area and scientific and engineering concepts to communicate scientific and non-scientific information for print or digital publication, multimedia, online, or verbal presentation.
  • Perform a variety of scientific writing and proofreading duties to support the dissemination of Biosciences Area research.
  • Communicate appropriate information between the Area and the wider Lab community and Biosciences website audience.
  • Apply knowledge of Strategic Communications and Biosciences Area style and best practices to ensure web posts and documents meet deadlines and quality standards.
  • Produce, proofread, and post science and human interest articles and highlights designed to communicate Biosciences research advances and introduce Biosciences personnel to a science-interested audience.
  • Assist with social media efforts, developing and collecting graphics for posts and web articles, and composing posts about Biosciences personnel and research news.

What is Required:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience developing and producing science-related content including writing and editing journalistic-style articles, news releases, and other related content in a research, academic or large/complex organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using a wide variety of media sources to effectively communicate with different audiences including photography, video production and editing, and producing slideshows.
  • Working knowledge of graphics and image-editing software (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Mac Preview).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and WordPress or other web content management system.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills including experience producing professional high-quality content for public presentations, e-newsletters, and websites.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with both scientific and non-scientific staff.

What We Prefer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in English, Journalism, or in a scientific field.
  • Experience in Public, Media, and/or Government Relations.
  • Experience in Biosciences or Environmental research.
  • Familiarity with working with institutions of higher education.

Notes:

  • This is a part-time 50%, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year (benefits eligible), Term appointment with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at the West Berkeley Biocenter (Potter St.) — Bldg. 977, 717 Potter St., Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
