Position Description

The Program Manager for Infrastructure will support the IT governance, assist in aligning strategy with infrastructure planning through design and review activities, as well as lead and oversee the implementation of IT projects across the infrastructure team supporting Harvard Medical School. The PgM will develop the foundational infrastructure program in coordination with all IT stakeholders incorporating Administrative, Teaching and Learning, and Research needs.

Reporting to the Associate CIO, the PgM for Infrastructure will closely align their work in support of the HMS IT Chief Technology Officer (CTO), HMS and Harvard technology strategy. The PgM will work closely with other HMS staff including the HMS CIO and CISO to align appropriate, sustainable, and secure infrastructures which may be deployed on-premises or in cloud architectures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Chief Technology Officer and Campus Information Security Officer with initiatives and projects around IT infrastructure and coordinate these initiatives with the university infrastructure strategy
  • Facilitate associated committees, review boards, and stakeholder engagement, leveraging discussions for decision-making, change management, and communications
  • Analyze the health of projects and programs and escalate action plans and report findings to executive stakeholders including the CIO, CTO, CISO, Associate CIO and IT and HMS Leadership to address prioritization and resource issues
  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
  • Design solutions and lead multiple projects
  • Determine and coordinate budgetary and staffing resources (internal, vendor)
  • Encourage partnership and shared risk
  • Resolve competing priorities
  • Oversee all aspects of the project portfolio throughout project lifecycles to ensure completion within the defined scope, quality, time, and cost constraints
  • Use knowledge of strategies and priorities at multiple levels to set and review project portfolios and balance work activities in the portfolio
  • Absorb and leverage project-related technology to ensure effective project management and collaboration
  • Apply Harvard University’s IT technical standards and best practices
  • Mentor others
  • Provide training to clients/staff
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel skills
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software, and equipment
  • Highly specialized knowledge of a specific technology
  • Knowledge of advanced IT project management principles (e.g. Agile) and software
  • Demonstrated cross-functional project leadership experience
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Attitude that supports an Agile working environment
  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy Project Management Foundations course (or external equivalent) preferred
  • PMP or other relevant certification and experience preferred, e.g., Scrum Master
  • Familiarity with infrastructure technologies that typically reside in a data center such as networking, storage, and physical servers preferred
  • Familiarity with applications, database, virtual environments, and cloud technologies preferred

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy Project Management Foundations course (or external equivalent) preferred
  • PMP or other relevant certification and experience preferred, e.g., Scrum Master

Additional Information

This position will be based in Boston. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you will begin your work remotely. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). The fully remote nature of this job is only temporary. Once the University and your supervisor determine that it is appropriate, in-person on-campus work will be required as a condition of continued employment. This department actively supports some remote work (within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business) where business and team needs allow. Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
