Day & Zimmermann is accepting applications for a DoD SSHO (Site Safety Health Officer) to provide on site support to our DOD project in Maryland.
Our Site Safety Health Officer for DoD Projects is responsible for providing management and direction to D&Z operations leadership in integrating EH&S processes at DZMC customer and project sites. Implement EH&S programs, processes, communications and metrics to achieve and sustain world class performance at DOD construction projects in accordance with EM385-1-1. This includes oversight of all case management for injuries, corrective actions and functioning as a business partner with operations. As needed, this position may develop and deliver training to direct hire and subcontractors as needed.

- Prior experience and success in a supervisory EH&S leadership role with oversight at the utility level, and previous safety experience.
- Team leadership and development experience.
- Subject matter expertise with OSHA and all applicable EH&S laws, regulations, and statutes. Subject matter expertise in behavior-based safety programs and practices
- High degree of professionalism and business acumen with the ability to interface and develop strong internal and external relationships with senior management and executive leadership.
- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and platform speaking skills)
What you need to bring to the table:
- Applicant will have already successfully taken the USACE EM 385 1-1 40-hour safety course. Experience and knowledge working with USACE EM 385-1-1 construction safety standards required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field; or equivalent experience.
- CSP, CIH or CHST certifications are not required but are a plus.
- 30-hr OSHA Construction Safety Class certification within the past 5 years and demonstrated continuing Safety training thereafter (8 hours per year)
- Ability to understand defined scopes of work and prepare Accident Prevention Plans, Limited Site Accident Prevention Plan and Activity Hazard Analyses for all work scopes.
- Minimum of 5-10 years of documented experience in DoD construction safety inspections
- The ability to obtain required site access to military installations (This may involve a background/character, criminal history, employment, and credit check.)
- Ability to pass a drug screening.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Responsible for the implementation of all safety requirements at the work locations.
- Oversees and can authorize the procurement of project safety supplies and equipment and is responsible for the implementation of the site safety training of direct employees and subcontractor safety training if required.
- Designated on-site competent person and Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO), as defined by The Army Corps of Engineers EM 385-1-1 (30 Nov 14).
- Responsible to enforce the safety directives per Day & Zimmermann Safety Program, and EM 385-1-1.
- Conducts daily safety and health inspections; Conduct incident investigations and complete required reports both for D&Z and DOD. Maintain a safety and health deficiency tracking system that monitors outstanding deficiencies until resolution; Ensure sub-contractor compliance with safety and health requirements.
- Attend all safety related meetings, incident boards and other safety-based meetings as requested
- Co-chair Plan-of-the-day meetings and discuss daily safety activities for all onsite personnel
- Maintain a daily detailed safety log.
