Student Health Assistant Job at Montebello Unified School District
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, provides basic first aid and health services to students; assists a school nurse with health screening and testing; performs a variety of other administrative support duties; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent in this class performs a variety of routine duties related to the providing of health services and information to students, parents and staff, in accordance with established policies and procedures. A Student Health Assistant is distinguished from a Head Start Medical Assistant in that incumbents in the latter class perform more difficult health and medical assessments requiring state certification as a medical assistant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
1. Prepares and maintains a variety of Health Services files, records and reports according to established guidelines and procedures; compiles statistical reports as required; distributes health literature, forms and health information as directed.
2. Administers basic first aid to ill or injured students; contacts appropriate authorities and parents as necessary; performs CPR according to established guidelines and procedures; maintains records of and administers physician-ordered medications to children as directed.
3. Assists in vision, hearing, scoliosis or dental screening as required; assists students with a variety of health questions as appropriate.
4. Assists in conducting site visits for evaluation of medical conditions, communicable diseases, health concerns and monitoring.
5. Assists in maintaining inventory and orders first aid supplies; provides first aid supplies to students in accordance with established procedures.
6. Maintains confidentiality of student information and records.
OTHER DUTIES:
1. Performs a variety of clerical duties, including filing, checking and recording information and answering phones.
Knowledge of:
1. Basic first aid, CPR and other established health care practices and procedures.
2. Accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene.
3. District, local and state health and safety regulations applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
4. Office administrative practices and procedures, including recordkeeping.
5. Telephone techniques and etiquette.
6. Computer operations and the use of standard business software.
Ability to:
1. Administer first aid and CPR in accordance with District policies and procedures.
2. Provide health information to parents, students and staff.
3. Exercise good judgment and make quick decisions in accordance with established procedures.
4. Learn and apply applicable rules, regulations and laws affecting student health and safety
.
5. Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
6. Maintain confidential student health information and records.
7. Establish and maintain files, records, reports and referrals.
8. Type accurately at a speed appropriate to assigned duties.
9. Communicate effectively orally and in writing with students, parents and staff.
10. Exercise patience, tact, courtesy and concern for the feelings of children and adults in difficult and sometimes stressful situations.
11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents and others encountered in the course of work.
Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and one year of office administrative experience; or some combination of education, training and experience that produces the requisite knowledge and ability. Experience working with school-age children is preferred.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
- A valid California driver's license.
- Red Cross First Aid Certificate and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate.
- Reliable transportation and current automobile insurance.

The District offers eligible employees and their dependents medical insurance coverage with benefits as determined by the MUSD Health and Welfare Benefit Committee.
Vision care, Life insurance and EASE (Employee Assistance Services for Education) benefits are provided at no cost to all bargaining unit employees whose regular assignment is less than 4 hours.
Employees eligible for health and welfare benefits shall be allowed to supplement the District’s health and welfare contribution to provide full coverage for all health and welfare benefits.
