Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under the general direction of the Director of Nursing, assigns, plan, implement and evaluate on one or more units delivering care for patients. Serves as a role model and assigns, directs and instruct nursing personnel in all clinical areas for all tours and at all sites in nursing activities.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
- In coordination with the Director of Nursing, coordinate, guide, direct the implementation of new/special projects for improving delivery of care and evaluate as needed;
- Maintains clinical expertise in specialty and is available as a resource person for nursing personnel and other health team members in all sites;
- Initiate and/or participate in activities including chart review to enhance nursing care and practice in all sites and clinical areas;
- Actively participates in scheduled supervisory meetings/classes and continuing education programs;
- Plan, organize, revise, conduct and evaluate didactic and clinical orientation programs for new nursing staff, supervises clinical experience of nurses during orientation period; makes recommendations for follow-up orientation when appropriate for all sites;
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess and monitor patient’s conditions and initiate appropriate nursing intervention including direct patient care;
- Act as a mentor for new and incumbent staff at all sites;
- Participates in the determination of conditions, resources and polices essential to the delivery of nursing care within the clinical service at all sites;
- Guide, coordinate and direct the development and maintenance of a system of evaluation of nursing care, practices and procedures, including the evaluation of nursing personnel within the clinical units/service at all sites;
- Defines, implements, maintain the standards of nursing care within the clinical service at all sites and initiates appropriate innovations or makes recommendations for needed changes;
- Review and analyze trends pertinent to the delivery of nursing care within the clinical service at all sites and initiates appropriate innovations or makes recommendations for needed changes;
- Develop, plan, assist in the preparation, implementation, evaluation of training for nursing personnel and educational activities for professional and allied nursing personnel at all sites;
- Circulates schedules and individually communicate information regarding in-services, classes, conferences and courses;
- Maintains orientation and educational records of programs presented/attended; submits reports in timely manner;
- Possess strong computer skills along with the ability to educate users on computer;
- Initiates and maintain a system of communication with staff during clinic hours of operation;
- Participates in Departmental QI, Infection Control, Discharge Planning and accreditation activities;
- Provides supervision to assigned areas at all sites;
- Serves as a resource person to unit staff and assumes responsibility for the management of several units at all sites, as designated on weekends/and all tours;
- Provide direct care to patients in all clinical areas as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1, 2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse
For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020, based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the Laws of
2018:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of
Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in “a” above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure; and
2. Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse.
