WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are currently recruiting for the position of Switchman/Conductor. We will be filling approximately 20 positions in Laurel, MT.

We are looking for people who put safety at the forefront of everything they do and enjoy working in a team environment. Ideal candidates are detail oriented, punctual, and open to taking on new challenges every day.

These positions are covered under the union agreement between the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Montana Rail Link. Starting rate of pay for new hires in this position is $30.18 per hour.

LOCATION: Laurel, MT

Factors to consider prior to application:

• It is anticipated that travel for these positions will mainly be between our Laurel and Livingston headquarter locations. However, system wide travel may be required dependent on traffic levels and manpower needs.
• Specific job worked and headquarter location can change frequently depending on seniority
• Position requires the ability to work on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days per week
• This is a safety sensitive position that is covered under hours-of-service regulations of the Federal Railroad Administration. This includes drug and alcohol testing regulations
• Candidates are required to complete post-offer medical evaluation (including the requirement to distinguish between colors or railroad signals) and drug screen
• No DUI’s in the past 5 years

Job Requirements:

• Must be safety conscious and committed to safe work practices that will contribute to the achievement of company safety goals.
• Ability to communicate with others and work well as a member of a team.

• Valid Driver’s License

• Ability to lift up to 80 lbs.

• Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

• Available to work at various job sites

• Weekend and holiday shifts required

Job Duties:

• Obtains/receives relays and/or acts upon oral or written instructions from the Engineer, Dispatcher, Switch Foreman, Yardmaster, Trainmaster or other personnel in person or through radio communications
• Operates various designs of switches and derails to change the route of the engine or cars within yards or on the road
• Couples and uncouples railroad cars for make-up and break-up of trains.
• Ensures that switches are properly aligned. Observes and monitors track conditions (broken rails, defective switches, etc.)
• Inspects train cars or other equipment before leaving the yard or as required.
• Applies and releases handbrakes
• Observes condition of passing train and reports results to appropriate personnel.
• Gets on and off equipment while the train is performing industrial station or yard switching to set or release handbrakes or to perform other duties
• Rides moving the car by hanging on to grab irons or ladder, sometimes for extended periods of time. Observes, interprets and relays signals affecting the movement of train and judges and controls the speed and clearance of cars
