City on a Hill graduates college-ready students that are responsible, resourceful and respectful democratic citizens, who are prepared to compete in 21st century community, culture and commerce. We do so by emphasizing academic achievement, citizenship, teacher leadership, and public accountability.
City on a Hill is one of Massachusetts’ first charter schools with the upcoming 2023-2024 school year being our 29th year of operation. As we prepare for another school year, City on a Hill is seeking dedicated educators and operations staff to support the empowerment of our students.
Role Description
The City on a Hill Teaching Fellow Program (TFP) is designed to nurture and grow the next generation of COAH teachers with an explicit focus on recruiting individuals that reflect the diversity of COAH’s student body. The Teaching Fellow Program is a one-year program (beginning in August 2023) intended to train individuals interested in a career teaching in urban public charter schools.
Fellows are full-time employees of the school, and will work closely with their manager, teacher-mentor, administrators and wider community to ensure proper implementation of school practices and policies.
Responsibilities:
Classroom & School Responsibilities:
- Take on increasing classroom responsibilities as the year progresses, following a gradual release model that will transition fellows from teaching assistants to co-teachers to lead teacher of two classes by spring of the fellowship year
- Engage as a member of the City on a Hill Community by developing positive relationships and attending all required meetings with students, families and other staff
- Participate in all staff professional development sessions, including two weeks of Faculty Orientation before the beginning of classes
- Work with Special Education and English Language Development liaisons to accommodate and modify curriculum and assessments in accordance with students Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- Other duties, as assigned by the Principal, Vice Principal or Director of Teacher Development & Compliance.
- Hold regular 1:1 check-ins with the Director of Teacher Development & Compliance to monitor progress to fellow’s goals
- Participate in observations of mentor-teachers, fellows and other educators
- A belief that all students can and must learn at high levels and a commitment your own continued learning, particularly as it relates to City on a Hill’s journey to operating as an anti-racist school
- A Bachelor's degree in a field applicable to the fellowship subject for which you are applying
- Previous experience in teaching (full-time, substitute, other fellowships, etc), particularly in a similar school setting
