Operates various mechanical equipment of considerable difficulty in sewer, drainage and flood protection facilities' construction and maintenance functions. Operates and sets up the telespection equipment including, but not limited to, the camera, winches and related items. Walks/crawls pipes/sewers and flood protection structures of various sizes to install and maintain equipment and make observations. Must comply with all Federal, State, Local and MSD requirements and regulations. Performs fabrication, modification, assembly and development of serviceable components as required. Performs tasks associated with the installation, removal, maintenance and/or repair of sanitary and storm sewer lines, property service connections and drainage and flood protection facilities. Assists with the lateral lining process. Fully operates and maintains flood protection gates, valves and closures. Performs basic, general and preventive maintenance on all facilities. Performs daily inspection, operation and replacing of MSD's flood gates/structures, valves and Combined Sewer Overflow facilities throughout MSD's sewer system.
Operates any of the small tools, welders and heavy equipment, including flood wall, gate and flood closure system owned by MSD to explore, investigate, operate, maintain, replace, install for and lay necessary groundwork for sewer, flood protection and/or drainage construction and maintenance as needed. Prepares equipment for operation. Operates and sets up the telespection equipment (i.e. cameras, winches, volt/ohm meters and gas meters). Repairs electrical and mechanical equipment related to telespection operations. Performs dye tests and records results. Crawls/walks sewers of various sizes to install equipment and make observations. Repairs or constructs walkway, headwalls and other structures of various building materials as needed. Performs repairs involving cutting and welding metal. Repairs and installs items requiring carpentry skills. Constructs pre-fab forms for construction crews. Builds box basin forms. Fabricates grates and steel castings, steel structures and street protection plates. Performs highly skilled carpentry type work in the preparation and installation of forms for the sheathing of excavations, the building of concrete forms and construction or repair of sewer lines and drainage facilities using hand and power tools. Installs or repairs sewer lines utilizing high-level masonry skills and tools applied to cement, concrete, brick and other materials. Unstops sewer/drain lines. Assists in floodwall maintenance and erection. Operates and sets up lateral lining equipment (cleans site, mixes chemicals, operates telespection system, prepares lining material, etc.). Operates, replaces and maintains flood gates, valves, closure parts, etc. Performs basic mathematical calculations. Performs mandatory CDL inspections. Empties and washes down equipment. Performs manual labor as needed. Performs minor service on some equipment as needed. Performs preventive maintenance on building and grounds as needed. Directs the work of Utility Trainee, Utility Worker I and Utility Worker II employees and/or other unit personnel as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned or as judgement/necessity dictates and acts as a Utility Leader when called upon.
Knowledge of sewer/drainage construction/maintenance, telespection, flood protection and CSO practices; ability to properly and safely use industrial tools and equipment; ability to operate a wide variety of construction and sewer, drainage and flood protection maintenance equipment and vehicles; ability to adapt to different types of equipment; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to use a volt/ohm meter and gas meter; ability to use WCMS software (Hansen); ability to read electrical meters; ability to perform skilled construction and maintenance work; ability to properly place traffic control devices (signage, cones, etc.); ability to read, understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to read road maps; ability to interpret plans, blueprints and/or schematics and atlases; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to perform physically demanding tasks as outlined above; ability to work outdoors, at night and weekends under adverse working conditions such as inclement weather; ability to work effectively under heavy, unpredictable surges in workload; ability to work various shifts and mandatory overtime.
High School Diploma or GED; three or more years experience in sewer/drainage construction/maintenance, telespection , flood protection or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Must have completed the requirements for a Utility Worker I and Utility Worker II. Must have successfully completed 6 of 11 items as noted on Certification Criteria for Utility Worker III Program. Must be certified on at least three pieces of equipment within the UWIII classification. Must have obtained a qualifying score on the CAPS test. Must have an acceptable and reliable means for being contacted during off-duty hours. Must possess a CDL Class A with N endorsement certification. Must have safe work and driving habits.
