Full Level Specialist – Cromer Lab
Division of Pediatric Surgery

- Engineering red blood cells to produce and/or secrete therapeutic proteins directly into the blood stream
- Developing tools to lend a selective advantage to therapeutically relevant cell types
- Introducing inducible or automatic kill switches to prevent differentiation into unwanted cell types
The Specialist will participate in all aspects of molecular biology tool development, as well as in vitro and in vivo experiments needed to vet these tools in relevant clinical models. The ultimate goal of this work is to develop strategies to overcome the greatest current bottlenecks to gene therapy treatments, such as low editing and delivery efficiencies. The Specialist will contribute to developing and operationalizing strategic initiatives to promote the success of the program.
- Molecular biology, in vitro cell culture, and in vivo mouse models
- Regulatory applications for gene therapy research projects
- Developing therapies for genetic causes of hematopoietic diseases (including, but not limited to, sickle cell disease, beta-thalassemia, alpha-thalassemia, hemophilia B, phenylketonuria, and polycythemia vera)
The Specialist will work in a vibrant environment with MD and PhD scientists at UCSF, in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary research and Cromer lab communities.
Qualified candidates must have (or in process of obtaining) a Ph.D. or M.D. in Medicine, Immunology, Stem Cell Biology or a related field. Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission. Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement by the time of hire. Candidates must also have demonstrated expertise with immuno-deficient and humanized mouse models, particularly as it pertains to modeling hematopoiesis following transplantation of modified human and mouse cells, extensive training in cutting-edge hematopoietic stem cell culturing techniques, such as expansion of engraftable stem cell populations, and the ability to lead and publish papers in the space of genome editing and hematopoiesis in high-profile journals.
Candidates must also be able to work independently, including designing, executing, and troubleshooting experiments, mentor junior members of the lab on various research projects and conduct journal clubs, and have excellent command of spoken and written English, including giving oral presentations and writing manuscripts and grants.
