Coach/Mentor Job Description

Reports to: Education Manager (follows Central Office Schedule)

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Under the supervision of the Education Manager and Education Coordinator, the Early Childhood Mentor Coach shall be responsible to:

  • Ensure successful implementation of the CRHS Early Childhood Education Coach/Mentor program plans and operational procedures.
  • Conduct center site observations to promote developmentally appropriate practices, sound program approaches to delivery of services, and impart culturally and linguistically appropriate beliefs.
  • Administer the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) twice a year and analyze ongoing assessment data including literacy specific assessments to measure improvement in child outcomes.
  • Provide one-to one mentor coaching strategies for improving teacher-child interactions and how to work with culturally, linguistically, and developmentally diverse groups of children through intensive interactions with teachers and children.
  • Conduct small group meetings for teaching staff to discuss appropriate curriculum planning and implementation, the ongoing assessment process, and how to individualize curriculum.
  • Provide informal learning opportunities for teachers to reflect on and apply theory and learning to everyday practice.
  • Maintain knowledgeable on the program’s curriculum and operational procedures related to early care and education.
  • Assist with the collection and gathering of child progress data.
  • Provide encouragement designed to support teaching staff’s completion of college coursework towards earning academic degrees.
  • Gather and track coursework documentation from teaching staff and submit to Education Manager.
  • Maintain documentation of all services provided and reports submitted.
  • Distribute latest research based resources and materials.
  • Attend all required meetings, pre-service, in-service, and other training as required.
  • All other duties assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor degree in Early Child Development, Child Development or Early Education with three years of work experience.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Windows and applications such as Word and Excel. Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) reliable and maintains certification.
  • Knowledge of Creative Curriculum and preschool environmental rating scales
  • Ability to clearly understand, interpret and implement early childhood assessment tools for young children including, training for Early Childhood Rating Scale and TS GOLD.
  • Knowledge of social services functions and activities and be knowledgeable of relevant public and private agencies.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and initiative.
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability to filed staff program continuity.
  • Ability to monitor, analyze and evaluate program systems and procedures, and maintaining reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with staff, clients, and other professionals.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of low income families and multicultural beliefs and practices.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently, work a flexible schedule and travel throughout CRHS service area using personal or agency vehicle.

Physical Abilities

Must be physically able to lift (up to 50 Lbs.) repetitively, bend, stoop in the care of young children throughout the workday.

  • Positions requiring the use of personal owned vehicle to perform job tasks; successful applicants must:
  • Be 21 years of age
  • Have a current valid driver’s license
  • Provide proof of current automobile liability insurance with a minimum bodily injury limit of $100,000 per person $300,000 per occurrence on personal owned vehicle and $50,000 property damage
  • Provide a current Motor Vehicle Report in order to be insurable by the program’s non-owned insurance plan

General:

  • I understand that Cheaha Regional Head Start/Early Head Start operates centers in Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Coosa, Calhoun, and Cleburne Counties and that it will be necessary for me to travel to any of these counties to perform my job as assigned.
  • I also understand that my refusal to go as assigned will be considered as a resignation and or my being terminated from Cheaha Regional Head Start/ Early Head Start.
  • I understand and have received a copy of the Cheaha Regional Head Start/Early Head Start internal dispute policy and agree to follow it if needed.
  • I understand that I am responsible to participate in the recruitment of children with special needs and all eligible children without regards to race, creed, color, ethnicity and religion.
  • I understand that I am responsible for helping to obtain In-Kind to help meet Cheaha Regional Head Start/Early Head Start Non-Federal share of 20% of funding each program year.

All job offers/work agreements are contingent on the approval of the Policy Council, a negative State Child Abuse/Neglect registry check, negative results of a State/Federal criminal history background check, and negative results on drug/alcohol screening (pre-employment and random). After successfully completion of the 3-month probationary period, employee will be offered benefits and regular employment status.
