Positions in this function provides laboratory services and supervisory support by directing the work of processing staff that are processing and manifesting specimens in the clinical laboratory.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the performance of specimen processing and manifesting in accordance with medical group and governmental standards
  • Supervises the daily activities of Processors on both shifts (see processor job description.) Oversees the accurate and appropriate standardized processing and manifesting of specimens. Improve workflow
  • Trains processors and provides re-training if needed
  • Performs annual competency and annual merit reviews
  • Evaluates workflow in the processing area and suggests methods to improve processes
  • Handles all specimen issues on problem logs with resolution
  • Investigates all problem specimens left in problem racks
  • Checks all extra specimens ensuring all tests are ordered and completed
  • Excellent computer skills (NextGen and CLS systems)
  • Monitors supply inventory and maintains supply area
  • Helps write policies and procedures for the processing department
  • Completes and submits time cards for the staff
  • Prepares monthly and daily schedules, approves PTO
  • Schedules breaks and meals
  • Covers short staff, responsible for two shifts from 8:30am - 10:00pm
  • Directs staff coverage to multiple processing sites so that all operational hours are covered
  • Assists with operational supervision of the laboratory as needed
  • Calls reference labs or phlebotomy supervisors as needed to verify specimen requirements or handle issues with specimens
  • Maintains patient confidentiality
  • Promotes staff safety practices- ensures PPE is being used properly
  • Performs related work as required


Typical Physical Demands:

  • Full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Frequent standing and walking for long periods of time
  • Lifting and carrying supplies
  • Visual acuity and normal color perception


Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a medical group and laboratory are possible.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Clinical laboratory procedures for specimen processing and manifesting
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles to oversee the work of processing
  • Knowledge of laboratory test requirements
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology and the ability to interact with Medical Staff regarding specimen processing
  • Knowledge of safety requirements and the ability to recognize and provide correction to hazardous conditions
  • Proven ability to evaluate staff for competency
  • Demonstrated skill in laboratory documentation
  • Demonstrated skill in identifying and resolving problems
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
  • Proven ability to evaluate and use statistics and other data
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Medical Technology or AAS degree in Medical Lab Technician
  • 6+ years experience as phlebotomist or specimen processor

New York Residents Only: The hourly range for New York residents is $22.45 to $43.89.
