Return Utah Program

Attention professionals looking to return to the workforce after a career break of two years or more. The State of Utah and Lieutenant Governor Deidre M. Henderson invite you to apply for the Return Utah program. This 16-week program is similar to an internship and is designed to provide the experience, training, skill, and mentoring needed to successfully return to the workforce after a hiatus. Using a cohort model, participants will navigate this professional and personal life transition together, bolstered by expert group coaching and customized programming.

This is a Part-Time, intent-to-hire Return Utah opportunity. Please note, that while we will provide access to resources that will enable you to explore further employment opportunities, your participation does not guarantee employment with the State of Utah upon conclusion of the program.

Return Utah Opportunity

The vision of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity (Go Utah) is to create the world’s best economy and quality of life. The office accomplishes its vision by cultivating economic prosperity in Utah. In support of this, the Utah Innovation Center provides expert guidance, training, and proposal assistance to support small businesses as they competitively bid for federal research and development funding to develop and commercialize innovative technology.

The Utah Innovation Center seeks a part-time returner (part of Return Utah) to function as a project coordinator in support of the Federal and State Technology (FAST) partnership award received from the Small Business Administration. The returner will seek, coordinate and promote opportunities throughout the state to support technology development through the Federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. There will be a particular focus on underserved and underrepresented entrepreneurs and woman-owned and small disadvantaged small businesses.

The returner will work between 20 and 29 hours per week with some flexibility on schedule. This position can be in-office, remote, or hybrid and can accommodate a rural Utah worker. Once the official returnship concludes, the returner may have the opportunity to continue working part-time as a Utah Innovation Center team member.

Principal Duties

  • Research and identify underserved populations in support of the FAST objectives

  • Develop strategies to connect with the target audience


  • Coordinate outreach opportunities and support the team in executing plans

  • Build relationships with partner organizations

  • Collect, audit, and populate metrics

  • Assist with reporting requirements

  • Assist in developing promotional materials and campaigns

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Project management experience, including working with deadlines and meeting deliverables

  • Excellent soft skills, including problem-solving, teamwork, and time management

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively individually and in a team environment

  • Communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely

  • Detail oriented without losing the ability to see the big picture

  • Workflow management, from project request to completion

  • Strong understanding of and commitment to effective processes and procedures

  • Working knowledge of Google Apps and Microsoft Office
