This position plays a critical role in managing the safety and fluidity of the CPKC network by ensuring any challenges at crossings, signals, or other critical incidents are addressed timely and within the Operating Procedures and FRA guidelines set forth. Leads the effort in ensuring that open trouble items are swiftly resolved to ensure restoration of train service while also managing the hours of services of CPKC safety sensitive positions - this requires a thorough understanding of the FRA hours of service rules, CPKC policy and practices, good judgment and well developed decision making skills. Leads the coordination effort between local law enforcement, CPKC Special Agents, and the operations team on any security related issues ensuring a primary focus on the protection of the public, the environment, and CPKC employees, assets, and infrastructure.
The Sr Critical Incident Coordinator is the first contact for emergency situations and coordinates responses from all relevant parties. Has a thorough understanding of operating metrics and the impact of service interruptions through specialized experience gained in the position. This role communicates with first responders and operates the automatic notification system and maintains records of all incidents and railroad signal trouble reports. This is a fast pace environment with significant impact to the public, environment, and CPKC employees. The Sr Coordinator is responsible for training new employees ensuring a thorough understanding of standard operating procedures. Provides feedback and follow-up training as needed. Reviews reports and ensures remediation for any inaccuracies. Additionally, the Sr Coordinator has an in-depth understanding of CPKC systems practices to assist the Director with reporting and handling of complex issues. This position ensures 24/7 desk coverage which may require long hours and duties on short notice. Ensures upkeep of contact and territory information with a critical database. Shift lead during large scale or catastrophic events; responsible for team deliverables.
Uses highly developed specialized skills to complete a wide range of tasks and procedures. Generates innovative solutions to complex processes or problems. Proposes improvements to processes and/or systems to achieve greater results. Delivers work, which directly impacts quality of team output to agreed timescales, service levels or similar metric.
Accountabilities
- Monitors emergency phone lines and uses knowledge of safety, security, railroad operations, FRA guidelines, and CPKC policies and procedures to handle in the most efficient and safe manner while ensuring the protection of the public, environment, and CPKC employees, assets, and infrastructure.
- Directly impacts operating metrics by ensuring timely notification and resolution for any service interruption.
- Single point of contact for handling of signal or other infrastructure defects that impacts the public and/or train operations.
- Manages hours of service for CPKC safety sensitive positions and works with CPKC leadership when needed for complex scenarios or large scale service disruptions to reduce delays and return system to service.
- Maintains accuracy of contact information and territory assigments within Signal Trouble Ticket database.
- Leads the coordination effort between local law enforcement, CPKC Special Agents, and the operations team on any security related issues ensuring a primary focus on the protection of the public, the environment, and CPKC employees, assets, and infrastructure.
- Assumes role of Shift Lead and is accountable for team deliverables when emergency service interruption desk is implemented for large scale or catastrophic events.
- Proactively monitors severe weather conditions and distributes accordingly to mitigate catastrophic events and ensure the safety of CPKC employees and assets.
- Responsible for new hire on the job training and provides regular feedback for Critical Incident Coordinators ensuring the development of high performing team members.
- Provides ad hoc reports and detailed analysis of complex situations to the Director.
- Understands the relevant business metrics and applies effective tactics to mitigate negative impacts to key metrics.
- Identifies when a rule/regulation/policy has been violated and has one-on-one accountability conversations with an individual who has not met expectations, using CPKC Candor, Aligning the Stars & CPKC ABC's, and have the individual produce better results. Escalates violation to appropriate department when violation occurs outside scope of authority.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Minimum eight (8) years of relevant operations experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Specialist knowledge of one or more disciplines of railroad operations
Preferred
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in a job related major field of study
- Acumen in one or more discplines of railroad operations - signal, track or transportation experience
- Familiarity with train schedules, rail network, CPKC claims, signal or maintenance of way
- Ability to obtain certification in GCOR, HAZMAT, and pass the roadway worker examination
Working Conditions
- Shift work is an essential function of this job. Employees must have the ability and willingness to support critically important railroad operations 24 hours per day/7 days per week, working various shifts as assigned. Schedule assignments may include after-hours, weekends and holidays.

- This position may require minimal travel up to 10% of the time.
